A tick is a transient anomaly of very short duration, represented in a waveform as a little spike. The sound of lip smacks, crackling fire, and footsteps on gritty cement are sometimes mistaken for ticks. Ticks tend to be in the high frequency range, as opposed to pops, which are lower in frequency and of a longer duration.
