From Chace Audio

A subwoofer is a speaker dedicated to reproducing low (bass) frequencies - often 150Hz and lower. Program that has an LFE channel (in 5.1 multi-channel audio, 6.1 multi-channel audio, and 7.1 multi-channel audio, the “.1” indicates an LFE channel) or systems that utilize bass management will require a subwoofer to playback this very low frequency information.
