SAN

SAN (Storage Area Network) architecture connects storage islands (disk arrays, tape drives, etc.) together using a high-speed network that allows multiple users and applications to simultaneously access the various storage islands. SANs are an efficient and flexible means to access and manage storage because multiple servers share storage space on the disk arrays, eliminating the need for transporting cables or physical storage devices from one server to another. SANs also enable more effective disaster recovery processes due to their ability to span to a distant location containing a secondary storage array.
