The term pancake refers to an open reel of audiotape on a hub that is not supported by flanges. A pancake reel is more susceptible to damage and unraveling than a reel stored on a flanged hub. |
A pancake is reel of tape on a hub without flanges to hold it in place. 
Put flanges on your pancakes when storing them to resist unraveling.
