An oscilloscope is an electronic test instrument that allows signal voltages to be viewed on a screen - usually as a sine wave or two-dimensional graph plotted on an X/Y axis. It can display the amplitude and frequency of an audio signal as well as show distortion, measure timing between two events, give a visual display of audio imaging, and show the relative timing of two related signals (azimuth).

In relation to azimuth, the scope can receive signal (for example: a 1kHz tone) from the left and right channels of an audio source and assign an image to those signals that either looks like a wide oval (bad azimuth) or a tight vertical line (good azimuth). The closer the timing between the left and right channels, the tighter the azimuth, which results in better audio imaging for stereo program and the best possible frequency response during playback.
