Mastering

From Chace Audio

Mastering is a final processing step designed to prepare a track for a specific target application. For example, if an orchestral recording is destined for release in a variety of formats such as CD, vinyl, DVD, and an analog film soundtrack (optical soundtrack negative), it will first be mastered specifically for each type of media. Because each type of media has different capabilities, the processing applied during mastering will differ for each. During the mastering pass, the optimum dynamic range and frequency response is achieved for each target application, resulting in the best possible listening experience.
