MP3

From Chace Audio

MP3 is technically known as MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3. This is a lossy compression scheme yielding file sizes that are much smaller than AIFF with quality depending on the amount of compression. This format became popular for consumer for use with digital music players.

An MP3 file that is created using the mid-range bit rate setting of 128kbps will result in a file that is typically about 1/10th the size of the PCM file created from the original audio source. As a result, the quality of the compressed file has less fidelity that the source. Although the difference may not be noticeable to the average listener using inexpensive earbuds, MP3 files are generally unsuitable for use at the professional level.
