LEQ

From Chace Audio

At least in English, “LEQ” doesn't stand for anything starting with an L, an E and a Q. Instead, LEQ stands for "equivalent continuous sound level.” It is a way of measuring an average loudness over time. Whereas traditional metering will give you a level measurement for any given moment in time, LEQ measurements will monitor levels over a user-defined length of time and calculate an average level. Since the risk to human hearing is increased over longer periods of exposure to loud sounds, LEQ measurements can be very useful in determining the safety limits of an audio program.
