In terms of sound processing, an effect is a process or function that manipulates audio. For example, reverb is an effect that gives audio an echoing quality that can make any recording sound as if it was recorded in a larger space than it was originally.
In terms of motion picture and television soundtracks, an effect can also refer to a sound that is not dialog or music. Helicopter rotors, car horns, footsteps, match strikes, ice clinking in glasses, clothing rumpling, gunshots, and fire crackling are all examples of sound effects.
