Dither is noise, added in the digital domain, to help mask the shortcomings of digital audio. Dither is not a standard part of all digital audio, and with the higher resolution formats in use today, dither is unnecessary. Dither is usually applied when you are forced to use a lower resolution format, or often when converting a higher resolution file to a lower resolution file. |
