M&E

M&E is an abbreviation for Music and Effects. Generally denoting an audio track consisting of the mixed and combined music and effects stems of a film, an M&E track should not contain any intelligible on-screen dialogue.

An M&E track consisting only of the combined music and effects stems of a film will be missing all the production effects and sounds that were inherent in the dialogue stem and is considered “unfilled.” This is not suitable for foreign dubbing.

When production effects and ambience from a film's dialogue stem are edited into the M&E track or recreated through editorial, it is considered “filled,” and may be suitable for foreign dubbing.
